How to Configure Parental Control in Windows 7

Advancement in computer technology has redefined the way of living for everyone from a child to a well matured person. Though, this technology progress has been simplifying our works, our life, ways of communication, etc. parents are worried about their children's safety and security. Today, from very start of the study life, children start using computer and Internet, which is a very good place for increasing knowledge and build a better future.

But, along with the providing knowledge for building a great future of children, Internet is also distributing offensive material like nudity, sex, violence, etc. Moreover, children have fond of playing computer games for hours due to which their studies can be affected. And playing violence, sex, and nudity related games can even change the mind set, which can be really worse for them and for you too. As a parent you cannot see your children stepping towards the dark side of life.

Microsoft realizes the parents care about their children; therefore, parental control feature has been made more sophisticated, effective, and easily configurable in Windows 7. Following steps help you configure parental control feature in Windows 7 to protect your children from being diverted on a wrong way:

1. Click Start > Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears.

2. Click the All Control Panel Items option.

3. Click Parental Control option. You may be asked to provide administrator password. In that case, specify the password to go ahead.

4. Select a standard user account for which you want to set the parental control. The User Control window appears.

5. Click the "On, enforce current settings" option under the Parental Controls section.

6. Click the "On, collect information about computer usage" option under the Activity Reporting section if you want to know that which program at which time has been accessed and used by the standard user. If you configure this option then on the basis of the activity report you can further redefine the parental control settings, if required. The activity report provides you information about the following:

路 Data, time, and duration for which the system is used

路 Websites that are accessed during a specific time period

路 Files downloaded including their location on the computer

路 Recently used software applications and blocked software programs

路 Computers games played on the computer

路 Sent and received emails including their content

路 Duration for which the instant messaging programs are used, including the duration for which Webcam and audio setup are used

路 SMS sent to mobile phones using instant messaging programs

路 Files and links exchanged using instant messaging programs

路 Song and movies played on the computer

Now, the actual configuration starts. In Windows 7, you can configure the following settings to take advantage of the parental control feature:

路 Windows 7 Web Filter: Facilitates you to configure settings to allow or block Websites, allow or restrict downloading, etc. Using this feature you can block Websites that contain material related to nudity, sex, violence, gambling, etc.

路 Time limits: This feature helps you set the duration during which the standard user can logon to the computer. As soon as the duration is completed, the standard user gets automatically logged off. Using this feature you can set different logon timing for all seven days of a week.

路 Games: Using this feature you can specify the games that the standard user (child) can play. 路 Allow and block specific programs: Helps you to configure settings to allow or block software programs that the standard user can execute.

In this way, you can confiogure parental control in Windows 7 to protect your child from accessing Websites containing porn material, playing violent games, using computer for hours just for time pass, etc.
